Who are the Vets?

Veteran Golfers include ladies who have reached the age of fifty years (try getting their age out of them) and men who have reached the age of fifty-five years young. The Burrum Vets are one of the clubs in the greater Wide Bay Veteran’s Golf Association. We have an open day each year and many of us attend other clubs events throughout the year.

Tuesday 18th April saw the first game of the two games between Maryborough Vets and Burrum Vets for 2023. This game held at Burrum with sixty-six players in all. A light lunch was provided and all had a great day. The low scores reflected the difficulty of the Burrum Course at this time. AWAY GAMES

Seven Burrum Vets braved the rain and intense heat on 14th and 15th March at Gayndah and Mundubbera Vets Open Comps.  Jan and Kev Leader, Ray Crosby, Stretch, Peter Griffin, Phyllis Cooper and Mel Learmonth were the team.  As I said it was hot as hades and they had lots of that strange green stuff all over the ground.  Made it very hard to play a Burrum game.  Mel didn’t seem to have any trouble though winning his division(2) at Mundubbera with a 35points.  He also won best nine in his division at Gayndah.  Jan won best nine for her ladies division at Gayndah.  Stretch had his worst two games on record and came second last at Gayndah and fourth last at Mundubbera.  Enough said.   Good times had though with meeting up with all the other old farts from other clubs.  Also meals at the local pub and one or two drinks.

VETS OPEN DAY 2022

Interest this year was over the top with us turning away over twenty potential players from other clubs in the district. As it was we fielded seventy players(three failed to appear on the morning)on Tuesday 26th July being two groups to each of our nine holes. The course was in pristine condition with only the bunker on the fifth green out of play due to moisture. Hats off to all contestants for getting around the track in very good time with few hold ups. Most sat down to a quality lunch followed by the raffle and then the main presentations. It was gratifying to see many of our visitors winning both raffles and major golf prizes this year.

VETS MELBOURNE CUP DAY 2021

Thirty-six players enjoyed a two ball ambrose comp on the day with John Short and Ray Crosby winning the day. The day however was less about golf and more about having fun. John Horwood started off the day with champagne and orange juice for all mixed with soap bubbles floating through the air. The ladies put on their best hats and the winner for the fashions on the field was Kath Francis. Shirley Bullock won the best displayed buggy and Kerry Styles the best dressed male, although he looked more like a pommie pole(Morris) dancer than a jockey. A hamburger was then enjoyed by all and many thanks to Kate and Phyllis for the catering. Thanks also to Neil Clarke for running the sweeps. As always big thanks to Danielle for her tireless work behind the bar and in the kitchen. We hope to attract a bigger field next year. Ian Anderson Treasurer/secretary

GIN GIN OPEN

Five of the Burrum vets attended the Gin Gin open day on Tuesday 15th June. Warm day after some cold and drizzle the day prior. Course a bit dry but otherwise in good nik. Myself, Mike and Lorraine Drew, Mike Dally and Francis McGovern had a great day with Mike being the A division winner with myself at A division runner up. Francis won the B division men and Lorraine was runner up in ladies division. Lorraine also had longest putt and one NTP. Thirty-six players in all were at the day. A great meal at the end of the day but before would were allowed to eat we had to assist with the unloading of a pallet of beer and place same into the big fridge. I think Bruce McCormack must have timed the delivery just right. Even though we won just about everything we were invited back next year.
